Flatbush and Martense
Though the streets are empty and lined with cars in the archived image of Martense Street looking southwards of Flatbush Avenue, this neighborhood is now a bustling, predominantly Afro-Caribbean neighborhood.
No specific subject is in this photo, as it simply details a street scene, and yet the noticeable juxtaposition between black residents and passersby aside the Dutch Reformed Church and Cemetery, a landmarked structure of early Dutch families of Flatbush, begs the question of commemorative structures if and when black life ceases to walk the streets of Brooklyn.
